Ubuntu(formerly the TomaScoyk Duo)
Ubuntu (oo-boon-too) was formed at Colorado State University, where both Staci Toma and Ryan Van Scoyk studied for their undergraduate degrees. They met at a concerto competition during their sophomore year (Staci asked Ryan to help lift her marimba off of the stage). A marching band trip to the New Mexico Bowl sealed their friendship, and they started playing together soon after.
Ubuntu has performed five recitals in three different states. In 2014, they were selected as an alternate for the Southern California International Marimba Competition. After three years apart, Ryan and Staci both live in Colorado again, and they're looking forward to performing together more often.
Saxophonist Ryan Van Scoyk hails from Aurora, Colorado, and he is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Saxophone Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Colorado-Boulder, where he serves as the saxophone studio's Graduate Teaching Assistant. He holds a Master of Music Degree in Saxophone from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and graduated summa cum laude from Colorado State University with Bachelor’s Degrees in Music Performance and Education. Equally comfortable in classical, jazz, popular, and sacred settings, Ryan has shared the stage with Fareed Haque, Matt Wilson, Greg Gisbert, The Lettermen, and many others.
